RYAN BERTRAM

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." -Calvin Coolidge

After a 12 year-old Ryan visited the Corvette factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky, he knew he wanted to part of how America makes things. With continued interest in the art and science of manufacturing, Ryan pursued his Bachelors in International Business at Calvin College. After graduating, he realized his dream of working with manufacturing by holding client relations positions throughout the manufacturing industry. At Malisko, Ryan enjoys bringing together the right people for the right job to tackle complex projects, and helping to bring the total solution to the client's plant floor.

DAIRY

Many dairy and dairy ingredient manufacturers are operating with obsolete and unsupportable automation systems. Despite tough economic conditions and tightened regulations, milk production isn’t slowing down. Dairy processing plants must develop a sustainable approach to innovation to succeed in this environment. Malisko has a wide breadth of experience in the dairy industry and can help drive that success.

MALISKO: A DAIRY INDUSTRY LEADER

Malisko understands that dairy manufacturing can be both very similar and vastly different than other food and beverage manufacturing. From understanding federal, state and local level regulations to manufacturing process applications, it is important that who you partner with understands the unique aspects of dairy manufacturing.

This is why Malisko has a dedicated Automation Solutions Consultant who focuses solely on dairy manufacturing. After graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in Economics, Dan went to work for a large dairy balancing plant producing bulk dairy ingredients: dairy powders, butter, and tanker quantity liquid products. Dan served many roles during his time working in the plant . He started out getting to learn each process. Dan was taught early on that you could not be an effective leader if you do not understand how the equipment operated. Dan created, what he didn’t know at the time they were called, Standard Operating Procedures to help remind him the proper steps of starting up, running, and shutting down the equipment. From there Dan moved on to process improvement where he took his knowledge of the systems and applied solutions that would reduce shrinkage, increase efficiency, and reduce the overall cost of running and CIPing the equipment.

In a dairy plant, you wear many hats: HACCP team member, Food Safety Team Leader, SQF Practitioner, and Food Defense Coordinator.Dan’s role was Food Safety Team Leader, SQF Practitioner, and Food Defense Coordinator. He was also part of the HACCP team. Dan did his part in making sure the products made were of the highest quality and safe for consumption. Dan joined Malisko Engineering in 2016 as Automation Solution Consultant. Now Dan focuses on what he does best; bettering the Dairy Industry by bringing innovative solutions to Dairy Processors. Using a hands-on approach, Dan jumps right into the customers process to fully understand their difficulties.

Dan’s Certifications

  • Six Sigma Green Belt
  • Food Defense Coordinator
  • HACCP
  • SQF Practitioner

Our dedicated Engineers have years of experience automating Separators Evaporators, Homogenizers, Cheese Vats, Membrane systems (ROs, UFs, MFs, etc.), Powder conveying systems, Crystallizers, Fermenters, Blend systems, Spray Dryers, HTST, UHTs, Contherms and more. Malisko works with its clients to design and implement entirely new production systems from the ground up and provide improvements to existing systems through technology migrations.

Case Study: Dairy Producer Makes Quantum Leap from Fully Manual to Fully Automatic Manufacturing Operation including E-Records and Reporting for PMO Compliance

A national dairy producer wanted to increase receiving capacity and storage capacity, including cow water processing into Pasteurized Equivalent Water (PEW); in other words water conservation by being able to use the cow water (condensate off the evaporator); at a recently acquired milk powder plant.

White Paper: Dairy Producer Experiences Production Improvement with Process and Controls Upgrades to their Evaporation System

A major provider and producer of dairy products and ingredients wanted to improve the quality, consistency, yield and throughput for 30+ year old pasteurization, separator and evaporator systems at one of their plants.

Millennial Leaders Discuss Communication, Networking

With more people than ever working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, millennial leaders are sharing their strategies for communication, networking and conflict resolution.

Cisco Aids Dairy Farmers of America’s Digital Transformation

To optimize operations and workforce continuity in support of the nation’s food supply during the pandemic and beyond, Cisco and system integration firms are installing communication technologies to accelerate the advance of milk product production.

Case Study: Dairy Producer Improves Separator Process Yield and Consistency with Controls Upgrade

A major provider and producer of dairy products wanted to reactivate an idle 20+ year old Separator at one of their plants.

Case Study: Dairy Producer Seeks Help to Assess then Execute Improvements to an Overly Manual Spray Dryer Operation to Increase Yield

A dairy products manufacturer had a vertical spray dryer utilizing predominantly manual controls causing wide variability in the methods applied by the various operators. The result was inconsistent dryer operation, unacceptable product consistency, throughput and yield.

Software Tools Make a Difference in Dairy Processing

Dairy processors that leverage the optimal software can enhance product quality, safety and operational efficiencies.

Case Study: Dairy Plant-Wide Control System Upgrade in Less Than 3 Days

Perishable food products, especially in a high-volume, low-margin industry segment, cannot tolerate unexpected delays during the process cycle. Maintaining fresh, high quality product is a must, especially in dairy. For a large dairy manufacturer in the United States, maintaining consistency and absolutely no unplanned downtime is a constant concern.

Choose Heat Exchangers Wisely

When selecting and installing heat exchangers, dairy processors need to consider many variables.
